At the World Economic Forum\u2019s annual meeting, the Earth Commission called for urgent, science-based action to address planetary crises. Hosted by Future Earth, the Commission brings together an international team of natural and social scientists to identify the planet\u2019s critical thresholds.<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

Wendy Broadgate, the Commission\u2019s Executive Director and Global Hub Director of Future Earth Sweden, attended the weeklong forum and took part in an event co-hosted by the Commission. In it, she and others pointed to the importance of science-based frameworks and interdisciplinary research to guide cities and businesses toward a better future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t solve political, social, or economic problems without a stable and resilient planet. But too often, short-term priorities overshadow the bigger planetary risks we face,\u201d Broadgate said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Convened by Future Earth in 2019, the Commission assesses and synthesizes the latest science to define the boundaries for a safe and just planet where all living things can thrive. It\u2019s made up of a diverse team of leading scientists that work to identify critical planetary thresholds to ensure things like clean air and water, healthy biodiversity, and a stable climate for all life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Earth Commission’s work underscores Future Earth’s role in translating scientific research into concrete strategies, influencing decision-maker, and inspiring cross-sector collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n
